Nursing Home Resident Sends We Care Card to Fellow Residents

April 15, 2020
Chardon, Ohio - When Deanna was considering moving to Heather Hill, she told me she was concerned about finding friends. As the hospital liaison for Heather Hill, it was my job to visit potential residents and answer their questions. I assured Deanna that she would click with someone, especially with a friendly smile like hers.

Sure enough, before long, Deanna had found several friends. They played cards in the evenings and chatted throughout the day.

"We all get together and play Phase10," Deanna said. "It's mostly us girls, but sometimes we let John play."

But, when COVID-19 began to spread throughout the country, nursing homes like Heather Hill took swift and thorough measures to prevent residents from getting the virus. So, Deanna and her friends had to socially distance and could no longer play cards.

Deanna was devastated. "We miss each other because we're like family – these people are my family now," she said.

Enter our We Care Cards – Heather Hill's version of a postcard. Friends and family complete an online form, and then staff prints the message and delivers it to the resident.

Deanna saw the option to send a We Care Card and took the opportunity to send one to her friends down the hall.

"I miss all my card friends, so I thought I'd send them a card," Deanna said. "We can talk to each other from our doorway, but it is hard to reach everybody. I saw a post about it on the Heather Hill Facebook, and I thought: 'Why not?'"

While our residents are still connecting with family and friends via Facetime and phone calls, the We Care Cards are another way to connect with them at a time when we must be socially distant due to COVID-19.

Deanna's card-playing friends were happy to get the message. They know that they will be playing cards again before long.

If you'd like to send a We Care Card to our residents, visit www.heatherhill-care.net/we-care-cards and complete the form. You can make your message as long or as short as you'd like, and you can include pictures too! Our staff will print out the message and deliver it to your loved one.
