Caring Most About Your People

NOTE: This was taken from the blog of Foundations Health Solutions leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of our Foundations Health facilities in different roles. Whether working in housekeeping or as a nursing assistant, he sees firsthand how we embody the vision of our founder and nursing home developer, Brian Colleran, to be "A Culture of Care."

It's amazing when you have the opportunity to work with a care team that is passionate about providing the best possible care - and that truly knows and understands the importance of everyone on the team. That was my experience yesterday when I worked with the rehab unit care team at Heather Hill Care Communities in Chardon, Ohio. Heather Hill is our 4 Star, 161-bed facility located just east of Cleveland. Brandi Franklin is the administrator there and is doing a truly fantastic job.

I had the privilege of working with Tracy Thomas, STNA, and Catrina Barnes, STNA (who I had the opportunity to work with the last time I was at Heather Hill). Tracy is a single mom who just turned 47 and has a twenty-three-year-old daughter and a son who is fifteen. They were actually having a birthday cake while I was there. Christa Fernandez, the rehab unit manager, made the cake for Tracy. Tracy said Christa does that for everyone on the care team when it's their birthday. Tracy said it's really nice and makes everyone feel special.

For me, that was the thing that stood out the entire day. The nurses and the STNA's were one. No one was more important than anyone else. They had different roles that served their larger goal of caretaking. Each member of the care team helped each other when they could. For example, the unit was getting a new admit and Christina, the unit manager, jumped in with the STNA's to get the room ready. They received a specialty bed for another patient and the entire team jumped in to help. They got the bed switched out as quickly and as smoothly as possible so that any inconvenience to the patient was minimized. It indeed was amazing to witness and be a part of it. This is a "Culture of Care!"

"The leaders who get the most out of their people are the leaders who care most about their people."

Simon Sinek

I think that was the difference that I noticed yesterday. Christina cares a lot about her team. Marlayna, the director of nursing, cared deeply about her team. Brandi Franklin, the administrator, cares very much for the entire team at Heather Hill. Working with Tracy and Catrina, you knew how much they cared about their team members and their residents. Working with the nurses, Wendy and Lauren, you witnessed the same care and respect.

I left Heather Hill inspired. Feeling like I was a part of something great. A group of caregivers that genuinely cared for each other. That's a powerful thing!

Each week, Bob Speelman visits a Foundations Health Solutions nursing home. He works alongside a variety of departments to ensure Foundations Health is excelling in the vision of founder Brian Colleran's "Culture of Care." Foundations Health continues to practice the principles nursing home developer Brian Colleran instilled, such as resident and family satisfaction, positive employee culture, and investment in the community.
